Weekly webinars on topics related to Geoenvironmental Engineering covering wide range of issues associated with land contamination, waste management, and sustainability and resiliency. All interested are welcome to attend. Highly recommended for MS/MTech/PhD students, post-docs, and young faculty in geotechnical engineering, environmental engineering, and related fields.

AGERP’21 – Lecture on “AI and Big Data in Geotechnics” – 3rd May 2021 (update)

International Webinar on Rock Mechanics – March-April 2021
Some Young Members of different ISRM National Groups (France, Italy, Paraguay, and Spain) are organizing a series of international webinars on rock mechanics, with the aim of involving young researchers in different educational activities. They are contacting other ISRM National Groups to involve more countries in this initiative.
A tentative program has been created, and some online lectures have already been scheduled for the upcoming months. The flyer of the first programmed webinar, which is organized by the Young Members’ Group (Groupe de travail CFMR-Jeunes) of the ISRM French National Group is attached here.
The first session will take place on 11 March and you can register for free. It will include two contributions:
– Thermo-hydro-mechanical behavior of clay-rock in deep radioactive waste repositories

To the Continuum and Beyond!
The ability to predict granular flows efficiently has been a major challenge for years. An accurate and robust continuum model would be ideal, as it could lead to fast simulation of industrial and geo-scale problems. However, there are a number of granular flow behaviors that complicate the development of a continuum treatment including coupled history effects, nontrivial phase change, pressure-sensitive yielding, nonlocal effects, and shear banding phenomena. Rather than attempt to combine all these effects together, this talk will begin by identifying a class of problems that tend to be well-predicted using a very simple continuum treatment. These are problems based on intrusion, where the intrusive dynamics of solid objects (e.g. locomotion, impact) is the primary interest. We then discuss two ways to extend this basic continuum framework with nonstandard “add-ons”, in order to handle various complications. First, we will discuss the state of affairs in nonlocal modeling approaches, and focus on some new results pertinent to the physics of nonlocality. Secondly, as an alternative to adding more complexity to the continuum model, we will discuss a hybridized DEM/continuum method that allows us to adaptively choose subdomains in a problem to be treated with continuum modeling vs discrete element modeling. This allows us to keep a simple and fast-to-solve continuum model almost everywhere, while providing a more precise DEM treatment in zones that fall outside the scope of the continuum model.

The third lecture will be delivered by Prof. Catherine O’Sullivan from Imperial Collage, UK and Mr. David Wines from Itasca Australia Pty. Ltd. The lecture will be on ‘Advanced Numerical Methods and Modelling in Geotechnical Engineering’. This is scheduled on 9th July 2020 and registrations (free and mandatory) close one day before the lecture (flyer)
The fourth lecture of AGERP series which will be delivered by Em. Prof. Malcolm Bolton from Uni. of Cambridge, UK and Dr. Chris Haberfield from Golder Associates Pty Ltd., Australia. The lecture will be on ‘Design of Pile Foundations’. This is scheduled on 24th July 2020. The 5th lecture will be on ‘Geohazards‘ and will be delivered by Professor Sarah Springman from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich), Switzerland and Dr. Barnali Ghosh from Mott MacDonald, London, UK. This is scheduled on 14th August 2020.
The 6th lecture will be on ‘Mechanics of Unsaturated Soils’ and will be delivered by Professor Em.
