Academia during the COVID-19 pandemic (survey results)

Vi trasmettiamo un lavoro, a cura del Prof. C. Santamarina e di G. Abelskamp, che esamina le implicazioni del periodo di emergenza COVID-19 sulla didattica e la ricerca del nostro settore.

Dear Colleagues,

the coronavirus pandemic and associated isolation periods have affected all academic activities in every corner of the globe.

The attached essay reports the results of an early study that examines the implications of this period on education and research within the geotechnical and earth science academic communities in four distinct geographical locations. It also includes the results of complementary surveys conducted to explore faculty choices for online education and student preferences.

Do not hesitate to contact us with any comments and feedback.
With best wishes to you all,
Carlos Santamarina

Winter School “From research to practise in geotechnical engineering” – 12–17 January 2020, Ascona (Switzerland)

The Winter School “From research to practise in geotechnical engineering”, coordinated by Prof. I. Anastasopoulos, will take place in Ascona (Switzerland) from 12 to 17 January 2020.

With the ultimate goal of developing innovative mitigation techniques, the international geotechnical engineering community has made substantial efforts to gain deeper insights on geotechnical hazards. For the state of practice to advance, academics need to join forces with practitioners.
The Winter School aims to bring these two groups together, to question the status quo, and to propose out‐of‐the‐box solutions. The program will combine:
a) Keynote lectures by international experts from the academia and the industry;
b) Seminars on state‐of‐the‐art numerical and physical modelling techniques;
c) Presentations by the participants;
d) Panel sessions, where the participants will have a “debate” with industry and academia experts on the applicability of their ideas;
e) Special session on start‐ups, on the process of product development, from initial conception to founding of a new company.

Researcher position at CEREMA (France)

The Centre for Studies CEREMA, in France, is looking for a researcher in geotechnical earthquake engineering for a project on the measure and analysis of dynamic soil parameters and characterization of the associated uncertainties. The candidate must have an expertise on dynamic soil behavior and laboratory measurement. A knowledge in seismic site response will be much appreciated. The selected  candidate will be based in either Nice or Aix en Provence.

CEREMA (Centre for Studies and Expertise on Risks, Mobility, Land Planning and the Environment) is a State agency of scientific and technical expertise, in support of the definition, implementation and evaluation of public policies, on both national and local levels. It is placed under the supervision of the French ministries in charge of sustainable development, town planning and transportation.

Deadline: 15/06/2019

Researcher position at École des Ponts ParisTech

Researcher position open at École des Ponts ParisTech, Paris, France.

The successful candidate will develop research in numerical modelling of soil-structure interaction under complex loadings including dynamics. Fundamental and numerical studies will be developed in relation with experimental studies performed in Laboratoire Navier and by outside partners. In addition to the development of classical techniques for numerical modelling of materials and structures (FEM, BEM, FFT, …), the valorization of big data gathered from the monitoring of geotechnical structures will be a priority area of research. This includes the development of new tools based on artificial intelligence systems for modelling and design in geotechnics.

Deadline: 18 April 2019
