GEOTECHNICAL EARTHQUAKE ENGINEERING – A Berkeley Virtual Short Course Series, February – April 2024

UC Berkeley Faculty (Bray, Zekkos, Athanasopoulos-Zekkos, Abrahamson, Sitar, Kayen) have put together an online modular short course Series on Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering. The course focuses on key concepts and recent advances in geotechnical earthquake engineering and is offered in three modules in February, March and April.

  • In the first short course module, engineering seismicity is reviewed with a focus on characterizing and selecting design ground motions and seismic site response analyses.
  • In the second short course module, soil liquefaction is explored: field and laboratory observations of the cyclic response of soils are discussed; simplified liquefaction triggering procedures are presented; focus is placed on the effects of liquefaction through evaluation of the residual shear strength of liquefied material and liquefaction-induced ground displacements and their effects on structures; mitigation techniques are presented.
  • In the third short course module, seismic considerations related to seismic slope stability, dams, levees, embankments and retaining systems are presented.

Question and answer sessions provide opportunities to discuss selected concepts in greater detail. Each attendee will be given course notes that support the lectures. More information and registration for this course can be found here as well as in this leaflet.

Researcher position at CEREMA (France)

The Centre for Studies CEREMA, in France, is looking for a researcher in geotechnical earthquake engineering for a project on the measure and analysis of dynamic soil parameters and characterization of the associated uncertainties. The candidate must have an expertise on dynamic soil behavior and laboratory measurement. A knowledge in seismic site response will be much appreciated. The selected  candidate will be based in either Nice or Aix en Provence.

CEREMA (Centre for Studies and Expertise on Risks, Mobility, Land Planning and the Environment) is a State agency of scientific and technical expertise, in support of the definition, implementation and evaluation of public policies, on both national and local levels. It is placed under the supervision of the French ministries in charge of sustainable development, town planning and transportation.

Deadline: 15/06/2019

Lecturer / Senior Lecturer/ Associate Professor position at University of Auckland – New Zealand

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Auckland invites applications from outstanding candidates for a position in Geotechnical Engineering at the Lecturer / Senior Lecturer / Associate Professor level.

The candidate will be expected to develop a strong research programme, to teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the Civil and Environmental Engineering programmes and to participate in the administrative activities of the Department, the Faculty of Engineering and the University.

The selected candidate must:

  • hold a Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering
  • have an excellent academic record as evidenced by a publication record appropriate to the appointment level sought
  • demonstrate experience and expertise in specialised laboratory and/or innovative field-based research.

It is anticipated that the area of research and professional practice may involve geotechnical characterisation of problematic soils, slope engineering, rock and tunnel engineering, geotechnical earthquake engineering, and/or other emerging geotechnical specialties.
