Two doctoral students (soil mechanics / geotechnics) at Charles University in Prague, Czechia

We are looking for two highly motivated doctoral students for our 4-year doctoral programme at Charles University in Prague.
The successful candidates must hold a master’s degree in engineering geology, geotechnical engineering, or equivalent subjects.

Deadline for applications: 15 April 2025
Start date: 1 October 2025
Send your resume & motivation letter to gianvito.scaringi@natur.cuni.cz

Position 1. Effect of temperature on the engineering behaviour of geomaterials
Supervisor: Dr. Gianvito Scaringi
Required experience/skills: coding of constitutive models of geomaterials, and/or thermo-hydromechanical numerical modelling of geomaterials (e.g., Plaxis, Comsol, Geostudio), and/or experience in a soil mechanics laboratory conducting advanced experiments (e.g., unsaturated and/or cyclic/dynamic triaxial, thermal oedometer or triaxial, CRS oedometer, ring shear), and/or fieldwork experience with energy geostructures.

Position 2. Numerical modelling of soil cyclic behaviour
Supervisor: Prof. David Masin
Required experience/skills: deep understanding of advanced constitutive models of soils (ideally, knowledge of hypoplasticity) as well as programming skills (mainly C++ and Fortran) and knowledge of ABAQUS, OpenGeoSys, and Plaxis.

Further details are provided in the flyer.

Post-doc position in energy geotechnics at Aarhus University (Denmark)

Applications are welcome for a 1.5-year post-doc position (with extension opportunities) to investigate the cyclic behaviour of a geomembrane energy storage system. The successful candidate will investigate the cyclic behaviour of energy storage technology recently developed in Denmark.

Candidates should possess a PhD degree in Civil/Geotechnical Engineering or related areas, proven experience in numerical modelling, preferably including soil-structure interaction problems and cyclic loading, and excellent knowledge of soil mechanics and foundation engineering. Acquaintance with the finite element software ABAQUS® is appreciated (but not mandatory).

A more detailed description of the project can be found in the attached pdf.

The project will be conducted in a team with Professor Lars Vabbersgaard Andersen, Professor (Docent) Kenny Kataoka Sørensen and Assistant Professor Hans Henning Stutz. For more information about this vacancy, please contact Hans Henning Stutz (Main supervisor) hhs@eng.au.dk

The position will be available until it is filled.
