Invitation to AGERP Lecture 4 on ‘Design of Pile Foundations’ (update)

The AGERP – Advancements in Geotechnical Engineering: from Research to Practice – Organising Committee invites you to a lecture series which aims to disseminate the coupled learnings from academia and industry on some of the key topics in geotechnical engineering. It is a pro bono initiative, and the lectures are free to attend.

The fourth lecture of AGERP series which will be delivered by Em. Prof. Malcolm Bolton from Uni. of Cambridge, UK and Dr. Chris Haberfield from Golder Associates Pty Ltd., Australia. The lecture will be on ‘Design of Pile Foundations’. This is scheduled on 24th July 2020.

The 2020 Kersten Lecture by Prof. Lyesse Laloui

The 2020 Kersten Lecture was given by Lyesse Laloui, on February 27, 2020, at the Geo-Congress of the American Society of Civil Engineering, in Minneapolis, MN, USA. Dr Laloui’s lecture is titled “Energy Geotechnology: A new Era for Geotechnical Engineering Practice.”

Energy geotechnology provides low carbon, cost-effective and local energy solutions to structures and infrastructures, which opens a new era for geotechnical engineering practice, by extending the conventional role of structural design to that of addressing acute energy challenges of our century. The presentation reviews the methodology behind energy geotechnology by highlighting its scope and applications to various geostructures for structural support and energy supply of built environments. Aspects of primary importance for maximizing the energy, geotechnical, and structural performance of energy geostructures and solutions to address this challenge are presented. Moreover, analytical solutions and design tools, as well as performance-based design approaches for energy geostructures are introduced. The final goal being to uncover the potential of energy geotechnology on the path of less dependency on fossil fuels and to emphasize the critical role of geotechnical engineers to take full advantage of this technology.

ALERT Geomaterials Workshop 2020 – Registration for the Invited Lecture, PhD Prize and E-School

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and after careful consideration, the Bureau and the BoD have decided to cancel the ALERT workshop in 2020 (it will take place in 2021 from September 27 to September 29), but the Doctoral School, the PhD Prize as well as the Invited Lecture will take place online. 

The doctoral E-School on “Point based numerical methods in geomechanics” is organized by Pr. Manolo Pastor and Pr. Wei Wu. It will take place remotely every morning from September 28th to October 1st.

The PhD prize and the Invited Lecture will take place remotely on Tuesday September 29th, from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm (CET) for the ALERT PhD prize 2020 and from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm (CET) for the Invited lecturer, Pr. Chris Spiers.

All these events are free of charge, but the registration is mandatory (deadline for the registration is the September 18th). Please read the hints in the Registration form: after filling the form and pressing the button “Register”, you will get an email with the registration data.

Seminario sulla Modellazione del Comportamento dei Versanti in Roccia in Condizioni Dinamiche – 17 luglio 2020

Si invitano tutti gli studenti, dottorandi e colleghi interessati a partecipare al seminario organizzato per il giorno 17 luglio dalle ore 14.00 alle ore 17.30 sul tema della “Modellazione del Comportamento dei Versanti in Roccia in Condizioni Dinamiche“. I relatori sono, nell’ordine di presentazione, l’Ing. Luca Verrucci della Sapienza Università di Roma, l’Ing. Mariano Mennitti dell’Università di Napoli “Parthenope” e la Prof.ssa Ing. Monica Barbero del Politecnico di Torino.

La Scuola Superiore Meridionale (SSM) di Napoli è una Scuola internazionale di alta formazione recentemente istituita e bandisce 6 borse di dottorato quadriennali nell’ambito del programma Modeling and Engineering Risk and Complexity. Fra i temi di ricerca i dottorandi potranno affrontare quello del rischio di frana, trattato con gli strumenti concettuali dell’Ingegneria Geotecnica. Il bando scade il 30 giugno p.v.
