XIII International Symposium on Landslides – Cartagena (Colombia) – from presential to virtual

In addition to our previous communication in which we announced the postponement of the XIII International Symposium on Landslides – XIII ISL for the week of February 22nd to 26th – 2021, taking into account how the Covid-19 pandemic has been evolving, with great severity in the American Continent, in common agreement with JTC1 and the authorities of ISSMGE, ISRM, IAEG and FedIGS, it has been decided to change the modality of this important event from presential to virtual.

The virtual event includes the presentation of the ten illustrious Keynote speakers originally invited, who have reaffirmed their support, and the participation of most of the authors of the short articles presented by colleagues from more than 30 countries around the world.

The corresponding program, including the detail of its activity, will be available on the Symposium’s website in the coming days. We look forward to your participation.

Laloui’s Research Group Biogeotechnics Webinar (15 September 2020)

Laloui’s Research Group of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne (EPFL) invites you to the Biogeotechnics Webinar: 5 Little Known Keys For Successful Biogeotechnical Practice, with Prof. Lyesse LalouiDr Dimitrios Terzis, Maren Katterbach, and Dr Alexandra Clarà Saracho

This webinar will present an alternative approach to material design and delivery using natural organic systems present within the soil to precipitate carbonate minerals that act as soil-binding agents. Technical discoveries and developments of bio-cemented soils will be presented, with a particular focus on how this technology can be integrated into mainstream geotechnical practice. Through the following points, under the scope of the ERC-funded BIOGEOS project, this talk will highlight to researchers and practitioners alike, the opportunities of a technology that will shape the future of low carbon soil remediation and stabilization practices:

• Applications & performance of bio-cemented soils
• Breaking the nitrogen barrier in biotic calcification
• Economics & environmental impact
• Equipment & monitoring
• Industrial practice: guidelines for successful integration

Date: 15 September 2020
Time: 13:30 CET / 07h30 ET / 19h30 Beijing Time
Place: Zoom

Borsa di dottorato presso University of Strathclyde, Glasgow – UK

Title: Micromechanics of cracking of clay subjected to air drying and/or gas breakthrough
Duration: 3 years
Start date: from 01/10/2020 to 31/12/2020
Stipend: £1270/month
Eligibility: Applications from UK/EU applicants only, First Class Honours (or equivalent)
Where: Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland
Supervisors: Dr Matteo Pedrotti (https://www.strath.ac.uk/staff/pedrottimatteomr/) and Professor Alessandro Tarantino (https://www.strath.ac.uk/staff/tarantinoalessandroprof/)
Contact: matteo.pedrotti@strath.ac.uk

Project summary
This 3-year PhD at the University of Strathclyde will focus on investigating the mechanisms at the micro/particle scale underpinning the process of crack formation in clay associated with air drying and/or exposure of the clay interface to gas at high pressure.
The research will mainly be experimentally-based and the PhD candidate will make use of state of the art technologies for the investigation of the clay microstructure including X-Ray Computed Tomography, Environmental Scanning Microscopy, and Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry.
Despite 100 years of research on the macro-mechanical behaviour of clay, we are still largely ignoring underlying mechanisms at the particle scale. Clay micromechanics involves the understanding of the configuration of elements (particles) and the forces controlling the kinematics of such elements. Clay micromechanics (including the evolution of particle configuration in clays when subjected to mechanical loading) has rarely been investigated explicitly and is a young and rapidly growing discipline in the field of soil mechanics.
Besides joining a vibrant geotechnical community at Strathclyde, the candidate will join the International Research Centre For Clay Micromechanics (https://www.irccm.net ) which will provide the opportunity for international collaborations and to spend a period abroad in one of the partner universities (i.e. Chalmers University of Technology – Sweden, University of Twente – The Netherlands, Université Grenoble Alpes – France, University of Brasilia – Brazil, Politecnico di Bari – Italy, Technical University of Denmark – Denmark) .
Industrial contacts will be mainly focused, but not only, towards the Carbon Storage and Sequestration sector.
