Postdoctoral position at GeoRessources laboratory, Nancy, France

The Multiscale-Hydro-Geomechanics group of the GeoRessources laborarory, Nancy, France, welcomes applications for a Postdoctoral Position for 12 months.

The research involves the study and modeling of hydromechanical couplings during gas migration in saturated clayey rocks at mesoscopic scales. The position is funded by a CNRS post-doctoral contract and is part of a larger EU project (EURAD) that aims to mobilize academic research on major nuclear-related issues.

Hydro-mechanical instabilities in low permeability geomaterials

The topic deals with the experimental identification of quantitative interactions between the micro-structure of low permeability geomaterials, the heterogeneous fluid flow through them and their deformation. In particular coupled hydro-mechanical instabilities, say couplings between fluid fingering and strain localization, will be quantitatively investigated. The study is developed within the framework of the ANR project called «STOWENG» underground STOrage of reneWable ENergies in low permeability Geomaterials.

Starting date: 2021-01-01

Founded in 2016, the conference emerged in response to the ever-growing need for a landmark event that will gather together a broad field of expertise, aiming to prevent and reduce the risk of extreme natural events and their aftermaths on infrastructure. Sponsored by international industrial partners and institutions, who worked hand-in-hand with the academia to deliver an event that fosters collaboration between different stakeholders, ICONHIC2016 and ICONHIC2019 attracted a large number of attendees from all over the world, coming from exceptionally diverse technical or business backgrounds, with one overarching goal: to prepare within the constantly changing and highly uncertain environmental conditions and develop future-ready societies, able to reduce risk & manage disruption.

Following its evolution philosophy, the ICONHIC 2021 edition ventures the step forward: to build upon facilitative dialogue and strong synergies and propose an informed and realistic course of action against catastrophic natural events.

XIII International Symposium on Landslides – Cartagena (Colombia) – from presential to virtual

In addition to our previous communication in which we announced the postponement of the XIII International Symposium on Landslides – XIII ISL for the week of February 22nd to 26th – 2021, taking into account how the Covid-19 pandemic has been evolving, with great severity in the American Continent, in common agreement with JTC1 and the authorities of ISSMGE, ISRM, IAEG and FedIGS, it has been decided to change the modality of this important event from presential to virtual.

The virtual event includes the presentation of the ten illustrious Keynote speakers originally invited, who have reaffirmed their support, and the participation of most of the authors of the short articles presented by colleagues from more than 30 countries around the world.

The corresponding program, including the detail of its activity, will be available on the Symposium’s website in the coming days. We look forward to your participation.

Laloui’s Research Group Biogeotechnics Webinar (15 September 2020)

Laloui’s Research Group of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne (EPFL) invites you to the Biogeotechnics Webinar: 5 Little Known Keys For Successful Biogeotechnical Practice, with Prof. Lyesse LalouiDr Dimitrios Terzis, Maren Katterbach, and Dr Alexandra Clarà Saracho

This webinar will present an alternative approach to material design and delivery using natural organic systems present within the soil to precipitate carbonate minerals that act as soil-binding agents. Technical discoveries and developments of bio-cemented soils will be presented, with a particular focus on how this technology can be integrated into mainstream geotechnical practice. Through the following points, under the scope of the ERC-funded BIOGEOS project, this talk will highlight to researchers and practitioners alike, the opportunities of a technology that will shape the future of low carbon soil remediation and stabilization practices:

• Applications & performance of bio-cemented soils
• Breaking the nitrogen barrier in biotic calcification
• Economics & environmental impact
• Equipment & monitoring
• Industrial practice: guidelines for successful integration

Date: 15 September 2020
Time: 13:30 CET / 07h30 ET / 19h30 Beijing Time
