Serie di seminari in modalità telematica organizzati dall’Università dell’Aquila (aggiornamento)
I colleghi dell’Università dell’Aquila hanno organizzato una serie di seminari nell’ambito del corso di “Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering“, collocati tra le attività formative del Dottorato di Ricerca in Ingegneria Civile, Edile-Architettura e Ambientale.
I prossimi due eventi saranno dedicati a due eventi sismici che hanno segnato la storia recente del nostro Paese:
- giovedì 26 novembre p.v. alle ore 10:10, in occasione del 40° anniversario del terremoto del 23 novembre 1980, si terrà un seminario in modalità telematica dal titolo “Lessons learned from the 1980 Irpinia Earthquake” tenuto dal Dott. Augusto Penna dell’Università di Napoli Federico II.
- giovedì 3 dicembre p.v. alle ore 10:10 si terrà un seminario in modalità telematica dal titolo “2012 Emilia Earthquake. Effects on natural environment and seismic microzonation” tenuto dal Dott. Luca Martelli, funzionario del Servizio Geologico Sismico e dei Suoli della Regione Emilia-Romagna. Assistant professor position in Geotechnical Engineering at the University of Texas (USA)
The University of Texas at Austin (USA), Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering (CAEE) invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in Geotechnical Engineering. The Department seeks applicants in all areas of engineering relevant to the field of Geotechnical Engineering with representative examples including: In-situ soil and rock characterization, geotechnics of natural hazards, urban geotechnics, spatial geotechnical variability, deformation-based geotechnical analyses, underground development, energy geotechnics, and rock engineering for urban infrastructure. All candidates with advanced experience in experimental, field, computational, or a combination of these geotechnical capabilities will be considered.
Review of applications will begin on 15 November 2020 and continue until the position is filled.

Invitation to AGERP lecture series (update)
The AGERP – Advancements in Geotechnical Engineering: from Research to Practice – Organising Committee invites you to a lecture series which aims to disseminate the coupled learnings from academia and industry on some of the key topics in geotechnical engineering. It is a pro bono initiative, and the lectures are free to attend.

The 10th installment will be on ‘Improvement of Soft Soils with special reference to Transport Infrastructure‘. This is scheduled to be hosted on 13th November 2020 (AEST). PAST LECTURES
The second lecture, titled “Geophysics for Geotechnical Engineers“, will take place on June 25, 2020 (flyer).
The third lecture will be delivered by Prof. Catherine O’Sullivan from Imperial Collage, UK and Mr. David Wines from Itasca Australia Pty. Ltd. The lecture will be on ‘Advanced Numerical Methods and Modelling in Geotechnical Engineering’. This is scheduled on 9th July 2020 and registrations (free and mandatory) close one day before the lecture (flyer)
The fourth lecture of AGERP series which will be delivered by Em. Prof. Malcolm Bolton from Uni. of Cambridge, UK and Dr. Chris Haberfield from Golder Associates Pty Ltd., Australia. The lecture will be on ‘Design of Pile Foundations’. This is scheduled on 24th July 2020. Registration (free and mandatory) opens at 18:00, 09th July 2020 (AEST) and closes at 00:00 23rd July 2020 (AEST).
The 5th lecture will be on ‘Geohazards‘ and will be delivered by Professor Sarah Springman from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich), Switzerland and Dr. Barnali Ghosh from Mott MacDonald, London, UK. This is scheduled on 14th August 2020.
The 6th lecture will be on ‘Mechanics of Unsaturated Soils’ and will be delivered by Professor Em. Delwyn Fredlund from University of Saskatchewan, Canada and Dr. Murray Fredlund from Bentley Systems, Canada. This is scheduled on 29th August 2020. The 7th installment will be on ‘Biogeotechnics‘. This is scheduled on 3rd October 2020 (AEST). Registration closes at 00:00, 2nd October 2020 (AEST). This Lecture will be delivered by Professor Jason T. DeJong (University of California, Davis, USA) and Dr. Dimitrios Terzis (Managing Director, MeduSoil).

The 8th installment will be on ‘Sensors and NDT Techniques in Geotechnical Engineering’. This is scheduled on 16th October 2020 (AEST). Registration closes at 00:00, 15th October 2020 (AEST). This Lecture will be delivered by Professor Kenichi Soga (University of California, Berkeley, USA) and Dr. Wayne Muller (CodedRADAR, Queensland, Australia).

This Lecture will be delivered by Professor Marcelo Sanchez (Texas A&M University, USA) and Dr. Fleur Loveridge (University of Leeds, England).
PostDoc position in Computational Geomechanics and Multiscale Modelling at UFZ (Germany)
The Department of Environmental Informatics at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), whose main base is in Leipzig (Germany), is seeking at the earliest possible date a PostDoc in Computational Geomechanics and Multiscale Modelling.
Energy and environmental aspects of geoscience remain the greatest challenges that our society will face in the coming decades. To provide a numerical tool for environmental protection (e.g. sub-surface integrity) and energy transition (e.g. underground energy storage), Department of Environmental Informatics develops an open-source Finite Element platform, OpenGeoSys in C++. The tool enables us to simulate multi-physical processes in sub-surface such as fluid and heat transport, or rock deformation and failure. For simulation of discontinuous deformation or crack propagation in rock, a variational phase-field (VPF) model has been adapted and implemented in OpenGeoSys (OGS-6). Within the GeomInt2 project (www.ufz.de/geomint) the VPF method shall be further developed and applied to various applications such as field experiments in the Underground Research Laboratories and Mines in Mont Terri (Opalinus clay) and Springen (salt rock), respectively.

12th International Conference on Geosynthetics, 18 to 22 September 2022
With great pleasure and honour the Italian Geotechnical Society (AGI) and the Italian Chapter of IGS (AGI-IGS) invite you to attend the 12th International Conference on Geosynthetics, 12 ICG, which will be held in Roma, Italy, from 18 to 22 September 2022.
The geosynthetics and geotechnical engineering community has reached full awareness over the last two decades, and the whole geosynthetics industry has focused on the sustainable use of geosynthetics in a variety of innovative as well as consolidated applications. After Sustainability, the ability to overcome the natural events effects, often related to climate change, and human activities forced to refer to a new keyword: Resiliency.
Hence 12 ICG intends to become the base for the next step and the conference theme will be: Geosynthetics, Leading the Way to a Resilient Planet.
The conference topics will address, through general and parallel sessions, keynote lectures and invited presentation, the most recent developments in geosynthetics, stimulating fruitful technical and scientific interaction among academicians, professionals, manufacturers, students.

Post-doc position at the University of Warwick (UK)
Applications are invited for a full-time Post-Doctoral Researcher position in the area of applied geomechanics at the University of Warwick (UK). The successful applicant will join the Ground Engineering Research Group as a member of research staff and will conduct research on a large multi-disciplinary research project entitled “From Mining Waste to Valuable Resource: New Concepts for a Circular Economy” (MINRESCUE). The work will be conducted under the supervision of the project coordinator Dr Mohammad Rezania.
