PhD and Postdoc positions in Infrastructure Geotechnics at Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden

The Geotechnics research group in Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden, is looking for PhD students and  Postdoctoral Researchers in Infrastructure Geotechnics (max. two positions each). The applicants are expected to be passionate about introducing/developing the state-of-the-art of modelling and testing of coupled processes (thermo-hydro-mechanical) into geotechnical engineering. The current research projects in infrastructure geotechnics include application of deep mixing under road and railway embankments and bottom support of excavations, as well as modelling natural and man-made slopes etc. These are problems where the coupling of mechanical, hydraulic and thermal response, as well as soil-structure interaction, is important. The applicants are expected to engage with industry, to create innovative solutions for major stakeholders. In parallel with research,  the applicants are expected to contribute to teaching at undergraduate or Masters level (typically max. 10%-20% of their time), with focus on Geotechnical Engineering. The positions are temporary research positions (4-5 years for PhD, 2 years for Postdoc), fully funded by external research projects.

Postdoc position at Delft University of Technology – Numerical modelling of cyclic soil-monopile interaction

Applications are welcome for a 2.5-years postdoc position on the numerical modelling of cyclic soil-monopile interaction in offshore wind turbines at Delft University of Technology (Netherlands). The research work will include development, set-up and calibration of 3D FE monopile models, in combination with advanced constitutive modelling of cyclic sand behaviour. Design of the numerical simulation programme, and validation of obtained results, will be carried out in close collaboration with experimentalists and industry experts. The new knowledge gained from combined physical and numerical modelling will be oriented towards the formulation and implementation of a new engineering p-y model for the analysis of large-diameter monopiles in sand under cyclic loading.

Full description of the position and instructions for applicants can be found using the following link:

For more information please contact Dr. Federico Pisanò: F.Pisano@tudelft.nl, or Dr. Amin Askarinejad: A.Askarinejad@tudelft.nl .

The closing date for applications is April 30th, 2020. Preferred starting date is November 1st, 2020.

Researcher position – Geotechnics- Imperial College London

Applications are invited for a full-time researcher based in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London to work on the development of in-situ sensors in soil for 18 months, with the possibility of extension. The successful applicant will join the Geotechnics research group as a member of research staff and will conduct research on an UKRI/NSF funded project entitled “Sits NSF-UKRUL Rapid deployment of multi-functional modular sensing systems in the soil”.
The work will be conducted under the supervision of Professor Catherine O’Sullivan, in collaboration with Prof. Daniele Dini and Dr Tom Reddyhof (Department of Mechanical Engineering) and Prof. Andrew Holmes (Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering).  The project is a collaboration with researchers from Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, US.  This project therefore presents a good opportunity to develop skills in cross-disciplinary working with a highly international team, comprising academic staff, research staff and PhD students.  We are particularly interested in applicants with experience in either laboratory geophysics, including bender elements, or with experience of running DEM simulations.  Please contact Catherine O’Sullivan (cath.osullivan@imperial.ac.uk) or refer to the official advertisement:

Closing Date: 26/04/2020

Postdoc position at Navier Laboratory (France)

Applications are welcomed for a postdoc position in Navier Laboratory (Ecole des Ponts ParisTech, Université Gustave Eiffel, CNRS – France) on the mitigation of crystalline swelling in clays by cationic exchange. This postdoc is part of the ALLUVIUM project (I-site FUTURE) and an on-going experimental campaign using XRD identified a shortlist of promising cationic compounds. In this postdoc, we propose to complement these experiments with molecular simulations to investigate in detail the effects of cationic exchange at the nano-scale.

The position can start anytime but not later than fall 2020.
