Researcher position open at École des Ponts ParisTech, Paris, France.
The successful candidate will develop research in numerical modelling of soil-structure interaction under complex loadings including dynamics. Fundamental and numerical studies will be developed in relation with experimental studies performed in Laboratoire Navier and by outside partners. In addition to the development of classical techniques for numerical modelling of materials and structures (FEM, BEM, FFT, …), the valorization of big data gathered from the monitoring of geotechnical structures will be a priority area of research. This includes the development of new tools based on artificial intelligence systems for modelling and design in geotechnics.

ISC’6, Budapest, 7-11 settembre 2020 – Call for abstracts
La sesta conferenza internazionale su Geotechnical and Geophysical Site Characterization – ISC’6, organizzata dal TC102 (Technical Committee for Ground Property Characterization from In-Situ Tests) della ISSMGE, si terrà a Budapest dal 7 all’11 settembre 2020. È aperta la call for abstracts, con scadenza il 1o marzo 2019.
The ISC conferences are the major events in the life of ISSMGE’s TC102. Since 1998, it will be the 6th time that geotechnical engineers and geophysicists from all over the world will gather and share their knowledge and experiences.
Besides the conventional site characterization topics, the conference will also focus on some other recent challenges. As numerical modelling plays a more important role in geotechnical practice, there is an increasing demand for links between in situ test results and material model parameters. Some recent research projects in this field (e.g. sophisticated numerical analysis of in situ tests) are very promising, thus a proper forum for discussing those results may be an important starting point in these areas. A special session will be dedicated to this topic which aims to facilitate cooperation between specialists in both fields. Another important aim is to facilitate more active cooperation between geotechnical engineers and geophysicists. While the combined use of the two disciplines can be very beneficial, the use of geophysics in everyday geotechnical works is still limited. In addition to having a session for geophysical testing, we are planning another special session dedicated to potential benefits of cooperation between these two fields, where best practices are presented and discussed. Such a forum may be beneficial for both geophysicists and geotechnical engineers.

The ISSMGE Technical Committee TC102 – Ground Property Characterization from In-Situ Tests in cooperation with the University of L’Aquila, Italy has instituted the Silvano Marchetti Award (SMA) in memory of Professor Silvano Marchetti (1943-2016). The award is funded entirely by Studio Prof. Marchetti, Italy.

Student Contest ESREL 2019
Il TC304 dell’ISSMGE – Engineering Practice of Risk Assessment and Management [link] – ha lanciato la seconda edizione del TC304 Student Contest, aperta agli studenti di laurea magistrale e di dottorato ed ai giovani ingegneri geotecnici (non strutturati in università o enti di ricerca). I partecipanti sono chiamati a rispondere ad un quesito proposto dagli organizzatori, riguardante l’elaborazione e l’interpretazione dei risultati di prove CPT. Maggiori dettagli sono contenuti nella cartella compressa allegata. La risposta dovrà essere contenuta in un breve contributo da sottomettere e presentare il 22 settembre ad Hannover, in occasione del convegno ESREL 2019 (https://esrel2019.org) nell’ambito della Student Content Session pre-conferenza.
I vincitori saranno premiati con un diploma alla fine della sessione ed il primo classificato avrà la possibilità di pubblicare il suo lavoro sulla rivista internazionale indicizzata Scopus “Studia Geotechnica et Mechanica” (http://www.sgem.pwr.edu.pl).

Faculty position at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg – USA
The Charles E. Via, Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Virginia Tech invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Geotechnical Engineering effective January 2020.
The successful candidate will contribute to the Department’s Geotechnical Engineering Program and demonstrate enthusiasm for collaborative and interdisciplinary research. Candidates should demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate instruction, specialized graduate education, sponsored research, and scholarly work. The CEE Department is comprised of 59 faculty members, with approximately 350 full-time graduate students and 630 undergraduate students. State of the art geotechnical research facilities are available, including the W.C. English Geotechnical Laboratory, field test sites, full-scale test facilities, and both on-shore and off-shore site characterization equipment.
The position is anticipated to be filled at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, but exceptional candidates will be given consideration for the Full Professor rank.

The State Key Laboratory of Geohazard Prevention and Geoenvironment Protection (SKLGP), Chengdu University of Technology, Chengdu, Sichuan, China, is seeking several full-time Postdoctoral Research Fellows to join the laboratory research groups on experimental soil mechanics and rock mechanics. The posts are fixed-term for 24 months, with possibility of renewal up to three years, starting as soon as possible thereafter. The interviews of the selected candidate will be held around 1st of March, 2019.

Giornata di seminari su Geotecnica e Geomeccanica per l’Energia, Università di Milano, 12 febbraio 2019
I colleghi dell’Università Statale di Milano hanno organizzato una giornata di seminari sul tema “Geotecnica e Geomeccanica per l’Energia” che si terrà il 12 febbraio 2019.
Le applicazioni geotecniche/geomeccaniche energetiche sono oggetto di crescente interesse in diversi settori di ricerca e industria e sono fortemente interdisciplinari, coinvolgendo specialisti sia nel campo dell’Ingegneria che della Geologia.
I seminari spazieranno tra vari argomenti legati all’energia, dalla subsidenza in applicazioni Oil&Gas alle geo-strutture energetiche, dalle fondazioni offshore per l’energia rinnovabile alla fratturazione idraulica.

15th BW – ICOLD, Politecnico di Milano, 9-11 settembre 2019
Il Comitato Tecnico su Computational Aspects of Analysis and Design of Dams dell’International Commission on Large Dams – ICOLD quest’anno organizza il 15th Benchmark Workshop on Numerical Analysis of Dams presso il Politecnico di Milano, il 9-11 Settembre (www.eko.polimi.it/index.php/icold-bw2019).
In questa edizione sono stati formulati tre temi, di cui due potrebbero meritare l’attenzione della nostra comunità geotecnica. Si tratta dell’analisi sismica della Diga del Menta, proposta da Università di Cassino e del Lazio Meridionale, Università di Perugia e SoRiCal Spa (Tema B), e dell’analisi di pre-collasso e collasso di un argine, proposta da Politecnico di Milano, TU-Delft e Stowa-NL (Tema C). Oltre alla partecipazione ai temi proposti, è aperta anche la possibilità di presentare un proprio caso studio.
L’evento prevede anche una giornata di visite tecniche e un breve corso sull’analisi della risposta sismica non lineare di dighe in calcestruzzo, tenuto dal Prof. Chopra, UC Berkeley.
L’incontro rappresenta un’occasione di confronto fra ricercatori e professionisti che hanno interesse nel campo dell’analisi numerica per il progetto e la verifica delle dighe.
Vi invitiamo quindi a partecipare e a valorizzare anche in questa occasione il contributo della geotecnica italiana.
